About the Teacher - Mrs. Leathers, Reading Specialist
I am happy to be starting my eighth year as the Reading Specialist at Alton Central School! In the past, I have worked as a classroom teacher, a Reading Recovery teacher, and an adjunct college instructor. At ACS, I work as the Reading Specialist in the Title 1 department as well as the entire school community.
Literacy in the 21st century is more important than it has ever been, so it's vital that our students have an early start on the path to lifelong literacy. As a school community, we work to build a "culture of literacy" in which reading and writing are encouraged and valued. You can create the same culture of reading and writing at home by visiting the library with your child, reading together, and talking about books. Opportunities for "real" writing are everywhere, too - grocery lists, writing to family members, or keeping a journal. Your home can become a community of readers and writers who "talk books!"
Through classroom instruction, small group support, and practice at home, we can all work together to provide a system of support for our students to help them discover the joy of a literate life.
Thank you for partnering with us in your child's literacy development!
